PLURALISTIC THEOLOGIES OF RELIGIONS: WHAT PRACTICES?

In contrast to exclusivism and inclusivism which have long had advocates in the history of the Christian tradition, pluralism is a relatively late newcomer on the theology of religions block, having emerged more or less during the last generation. It is in fact difficult to define this idea—theology of religious pluralism communicates one thing; pluralistic theology of religions communicates another; and so on—even as it has generated an enormous response that may have put forth more heat than light. Some have defined it according to a theocentric model that includes many (religious) ways or approaches toward an indefinable or ineffable center.73 This will be at least our starting point as we engage here the ideas of John Hick before moving on to discuss in order the work of Raimon Panikkar and Aloysius Pieris. Be warned that we will not attempt any comprehensive review of these thinkers, as their work is complex, multifaceted, and many stranded. Rather, continuing with our hermeneutic of charity, we will, as in the previous two sections, ask throughout what kinds of postures, attitudes, sensibilities, and practices are fostered by and nurtured through their theological views regarding the diversity of religions.
